My fellow citizens, we have a lot in common
I hope this post finds you well.
We’re not on the same page. Everybody lives in their own world. Maybe it’s the social media’s computer algorithm’s fault, keeping us glued to the screen and feeding us fake news. If it’s designed to divert our attention from each other and create a divide, it’s working. Just thinking of all the social issues, and the huge divide in our two-party government, makes my want to scream. It’s amazing if anything gets done at all.
I thought describing our bond we have with each other, will help bring us closer together. Definitely, you and I have a bond, most of us don’t even know we have. You see, your ancestors and my ancestors left the old-world and came to the new world. They all came for the same reason. A better government with improved rights, opportunities for commerce and the right to practice your religion. They left the old-world issues, prejudices, and troubles behind them. This is what bonds us.
They knew the new world, America, had a government like the British, but more improved, with checks and balances in government, designed to prevent corruption and misguided leadership from taking control. It guaranteed inalienable rights for its citizens. It separated religion from government and allowed knowledge and the power of reasoning to guide us in creating laws and programs for our citizens. Some people think this is a country composed of Christians. No, it’s a country with many religions. Our constitution grants us freedom of religion.
Although, some of our ancestors brought with them some vestiges of old-world practices, like slavery, organized crime, bribery, blackmail, radical religious beliefs, etc. I believe the original people did not bring these with them. In retrospect, we should have given each new immigrant a pamphlet, that would ask them to leave the old world behind and embrace a new world with more rights and freedom. Unfortunately, we didn’t do this.
I am also aware that some of our ancestors, did not come here willingly. African American, and some Chinese ancestors were forcible brought here for work, to benefit the present people, economically. Your ancestors had to fight for their rights and end slavery. They did fight, and they won. I hope you can forgive our ancestors for the wrong they did and move forward with the rest of us. We need everyone, in order to navigate the difficult issues, we all face.
So, in essence we are all bound by our ancestors’ beliefs and desire for a free and equitable America, removed from old-world problems.
